Title - "The Building Of The Church"

Topic -Reformed Church In Canada

This was the title of the sermon preached by Rev. A. Zeilstra on the occasion of the first service of the Christ Community Church in St. Albert, Alberta. Although the congregation of Christ Community Church met for its first official service on March 2, 1980, planning for this historic occasion was begun in Sept. 1978. The establishment of this new congregation represents the culmination of a dream shared by several members of the Emmanuel Community Reformed Church of Edmonton, who reside in the City of St. Albert.

Over the past year the founding families of Christ Community Church have been meeting to study God's word and to formulate plans for the establishment of this new Reformed congregation in St. Albert. Throughout this planning stage we have worked cooperatively with the consistory of Emmanuel. The consistory Of Emmanuel has given us both financial support as well as much helpful advice. Presently we are established as an outreach ministry of Emmanuel and are accountable to the consistory of that church.

The work at Christ Community Church is shared by six couples who comprise the Steering Committee for this new congregation. The Steering Committee is coordinating the outreach efforts of this new ministry, while sub-committees have been delegated the responsibility for planning finances, worship and education for the congregation. In all this Rev. A. Zeilstra has provided invaluable advice and assistance.

From the above it should be clear that we have awaited the date of our first worship service with anticipation and joy. The service was led by Rev. Zeilstra who used as the texts for his sermon Psalm 92:10-15; Mark 4:2-8 and Ephesians 2:19-22. Rev. Zeilstra pointed out in his sermon that our denomination has a history of small beginnings which have led to great works under the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit. The initial congregation of what was to become the R.C.A. met initially in the loft of a mill, but was to grow to become the Marble Collegiate Congregation of New York, which today has a national and international witness for Christ. In similar manner Christ Community Church, which now meets in a school lunchroom, can grow to have a national or international impact. However, such growth will only occur if we remain true to God's word and if our plans are devoted to the glorification of His name.

On March 23 Christ Community Church made a small but significant beginning. Forty nine people (26 adults) met to worship and praise God together. We are trusting that God will use us to spread His Good News in the city of St. Albert. We look forward to the future trusting in Him and we covet your prayers that God will use us in a mighty way to His honor and glory.
