Title - Mural Dedication - Christ Community Church, Welland, Ontario

Topic - Christ Community Church, Welland

There is a wonderful new look to the church hall at Christ Community Church. On Sunday evening, November 17, 1996, a hand painted mural was dedicated, not only to enhance the beauty of the church building, but to proclaim the glory of God. This artistic endeavour was crafted lovingly and painstakingly over the past three years by artist Heleen Fokkens. She wanted to share her faith through her talent, so she chose to paint this grand mural. She has depicted seven Biblical scenes in this 40 foot long mural that affirm the fall of mankind, the Holy presence of the Trinity, Christ's death, resurrection, and ascension, and the assurance of eternity for believers.

The dedication service was conducted by Pastor Bill Wensink, with music provided by For Heaven's Sake, the church's music group. The service was open to the public; some community and government officials as well as other guests and dignitaries attended. Refreshments were served following the service.

While this mural was not in tended to be a part of the many murals in the city of Welland, the artist recognized that an opportunity existed to give some financial aid to the Festival of Arts Council's Mural Restoration Fund. Heleen decided that a special offering taken up at the dedication service would be presented to the Chair of the Festival of Arts Council, Bas DeGroot, towards the restoration fund.

Heleen Fokkens has allowed God's hand to guide her, and the result is wonderful. She has produced a colourful and detailed work of art that graces the wall of the church hall, adding interest and beauty to the building. She has also produced a representation of the Gospel message in a visual and inspirational manner that allows anyone entering the room to enjoy and be affected by her work and to realize the saving power of Jesus Christ.
