FOR THE LORD IS A GREAT GOD,

AND A GREAT KING ABOVE ALL GODS.

IN HIS HAND ARE THE DEPTHS OF THE EARTH; THE HEIGHTS OF THE MOUNTAINS ARE HIS ALSO. THE SEA IN HIS, FOR HE MADE IT, FOR HIS HANDS FORMED THE DRY LAND. Psalm 95: 3-5

A small girl once asked her understanding father, "Daddy who made God?" With her simple question, she was expressing the burning desire of people to know more about the God we worship. It seems that every time we try to explain God to another person, we discover the painful and humiliating truth that nearly all of our explanations are completely inadequate. However, there is also much that we can know and share.

Any explanation of the nature of God must consider His greatness. It is impossible to know and understand Him without recognizing this truth. The writer of Psalm 95 : 3 said, "For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods." It is not difficult for us to realize that the Psalmist had made a comparison between His God, the God of the Bible, and the false gods known and worshipped by many of his contemporaries. To him, God proved the infinite greatness of His might and the preeminence of His Kingship even over the gods in that He is the Creator of the whole universe. It is not without good reason that beside the sea and dry land the depths of the earth and the tops of the mountains are especially mentioned as belonging to the spheres of God's influence; for the popular belief regarded the underworld as the realm of other powers and the high mountains as the abode of gods. The Psalmist, however, deliberately destroyed that belief; God's power is described as knowing no limitations.

The mysterious depths and the incalculable heights, the sea and the dry land - all are God's. He made and sustains them; every where His writ runs. For the Psalmist this was one great reason to worship God. This is also one of the reasons why we worship God; but there is also a greater reason . This great God has demonstrated His great love for us by sending His only Son Jesus Christ to become man for us men and for our salvation. Through Him, this great God can be personally known by all of us.

Let me ask Do you know Him? Do you worship Him?
