"Work hard so God can say to you, 'Well done'. Be a good workman who does not need to be ashamed when God examines your work. Know what the Bible says and means."
2 Timothy 2 : 15 (Living Letters)
Workmen who are ignorant of the job they are doing, or who treat their job with contempt, or who are lazy, have a reason to be ashamed.
This is true not only in every day life, but also of our spiritual life. We, as Christians, have a tremendous task before us; a tremendous responsibility rests upon our shoulders. We have a job to do. How we do that job is of utmost importance.
We can be ignorant about our job; we can be lazy. Yet we are told to be good workmen who need not be ashamed when God examines what we have done.
Our concern should be with the approval of God rather than of men. We have to be sincere in our doings. "Be a good workman."
We should never neglect the Word of God and treat it casually; neither should we seek comfort in the Word and ignore its challenges; nor should we try to make the Word say what we want to hear, but we should be receptive to God's message.
The church can do only as much as its members are willing to do. If your church is not doing its job, perhaps you should ask the question, "Am I a good workman? When God examines what I have done will I be ashamed?"
