Topic - Retirement

Bouwe Visser recently announced his retirement as treasurer for the Classis of Ontario. At last month's General Synod Bouwe was recognized by the Synod for "his exemplary and extraordinary service for so many years to the Reformed Church in America."

Mr. Visser has been an elder in Classis Ontario since 1959 and the stated clerk and treasurer of the Classis from 1979 until 1991. For the last three years he has served as Classis treasurer. He is known to many as "Mr. Classis Ontario."

The RCA Office of Finance recognized Bouwe's "consistent and stable contributions to the denomination during decades of growth and change in the denomination and in the Classis of Ontario. The RCA Office of Finance, on behalf of the denomination, truly thanks God for the blessings Bouwe Visser has given to the RCA and to the Classis of Ontario."

In an act of appreciation the General Synod adopted the following resolution and presented Bouwe with a token of thanks.

WHEREAS Bouwe Visser is one of God's fine gifts to the Reformed Church in America; and WHEREAS Bouwe Visser has been an ordained elder in the Reformed Church in America for thirty-five years, serving on lo cal committees and often as vice-president of consistory; and WHEREAS Bouwe Visser faithfully served the Classis of Ontario as stated clerk and treasurer from 1979 to 1991 and continued to serve as treasurer until 1994; and WHEREAS Bouwe Visser established procedures for transferring church funds between Canada and the United States, in conformity with government regulations; and WHEREAS Bouwe Visser maintained funds and oversaw the benefit plans and pension contributions for RCA Canadian ministers; and WHEREAS Bouwe Visser served faithfully as vice-president of the Classis of Ontario from 1972 to 1975 and served on various classis committees, as well as on the General Finance Committee of the RegionalSynod of the Great Lakes; and WHEREAS Bouwe Visser is a member of the Regional Synod of Canada Finance Committee; and WHEREAS Bouwe Visser has joyfully proclaimed the Word of God throughout the Classis of Ontario as a lay preacher; and WHEREAS Bouwe Visser has been a good witness to all as a Christian husband and father; and Whereas Bouwe Visser has always maintained a practical yet Spirit-filled and servant-like approach to his serving, embodying the Christian virtues of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness: goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the one hundred eighty-eighth regular session of the General Synod of the Reformed Church in America, meeting in Pella, Iowa, on the ninth day of June 1994, expresses its deep gratitude and affection to Bouwe Visser for his steadfast and effective partnership in the work of the gospel, and to his wife, Djoeke, for her quiet, loving support in his work.
