Christ the Same
Rev. Harold Oppermann

"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.
Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines."

Hebrews 13:8,9a.

Since 1900 there has been a shaking of the foundations of all beliefs. The sure beliefs have not only been shaken but have fallen. Darwin's theory of evolution challenged the Christian beliefs of some. All tried-and-true knowledge began to be challenged by new knowledge. Change came, making the world smaller through faster transportation. Change came again as systems of world government sprang up. The things that were believed as being true, began to diminish as people began to feel outdated in their beliefs and discoveries.

Change and uncertainty characterize our age. We have tried to cure our colds, but science tells us there is no real cure for the common cold. V%Then I was a boy at school I was taught there were only 96 elements and no more; but now science has found 102 with more on the way. We have thought light was one thing and heat another; but now we discover where there is light there must be heat. "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" is a has been: Stars do not twinkle; only as we look through the atmosphere do they appear to twinkle.

The faith of Christians is challenged. How can an old religion still apply today ? Some people talk as though faith in God is outdated. With all the change, discovery and resulting uncertainty, the very foundation of Christianity is being challenged. ,Is there really a God?"

There are so many changes in our age even Christians begin to think Christianity must change; and if Christianity does not change then they become dissatisfied. They are a restless people looking for change. They feel, "if there is no change there is no life." They think, "the church doesn't have the life it should," even when the church only continues the things it has done, which in other generations showed the spiritual life. There surely is place for activities in God's church, but only as they are Christian and help Christians express their love to God and love toward men.

Even ministers have been bitten by the desire for change and come down with the disease of restlessness. Some have felt the Gospel doesn't seem to work, so they resort to promotional schemes and devices to draw men into church. Hence you can find entertainment in some churches but not the full Gospel. Christ draws men to Himself, so let spiritual means be used.

Since Christians become restless for change and the church does not seem to change, some turn to holiness groups where they can feel a new experience. Now the holiness groups truly experience things - the question is, "Do they all experience Christianity?" Why are there so many non-Christian religious groups that pretend to be Christian? Because people want a change from the true church. If people want a change from true Christianity, the only place to go is to false Christianity.

There has been so much change 'n the last sixty years we begin to want change and feel lost without change. This is restlessness which, when it is directed toward the church, does not change truth nor principles of life and can only result in personal dissatisfaction. We want change but cannot get it.

Hold on! Our generation is not only restless and dissatisfied unless there is change, but it is also desperately searching for security. When beliefs have been cut to a few, people want a firm foundation - something they know is surely true and will not change. Yet at the same time they want change.

If you are in that condition, you must make a choice. What do you want ? Change your true Christian beliefs for errors and run all your life after a rainbow of contentment that you can never catch; or choose an unmoving foundation of belief: "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today and forever." Jesus Christ does not change. Men may challenge Him, His deity, His blessings to His people; but they are frustrated.

No one can successfully challenge your salvation, your forgiveness of sins, your right to heaven, your daily help by the Holy Spirit in living the Christian life. Christ does not change, nor does your salvation. When you truly believe in Christ, no one can take away your right to abide with Christ forever. You can put all your confidence in Christ. He understands the modern factory worker and his problems. He understands the modern teenager and his problems more than the teenager understands himself !

Christianity is never dated, because Christ and His benefits toward His people are forever; but knowledge will pass away. You have seen some knowledge pass away and you will see some of the present "modern" knowledge pass away with even newer discoveries.

Choose Christ. He is the same Forever.
